Have you ever typed in "web hosting review" into a Google search and the search engine returned you hundreds of results showing websites that are reviewing web hosting services? If you do visit theses sites you will see that the same top 20 companies keep appearing in the reviews. It may be that these companies are the most popular web hosting services on the internet. They may have built thousands of websites for people who want them and therefore the search results are an indication of the goodwill they must have earned.
It is equally possible that all of us have taken a publisher or advertiser account from a reputable company that indulges in affiliate marketing which is also part of the internet biggest affiliate network. We could have finally come to the websites that are offering web hosting plans at throwaway prices and offering commissions of $80-100 on shared hosting plans, $100-$110 on reseller hosting plans and $150-$20 for the full-time web hosting services that are sold.
However we must not judge the web developers too harshly on this. There is quite a quantum of work to be completed by them in terms of designing for the web and finding the right SEO tactics and from building back links to actually marketing the product. A lot of effort and quite a sum of money has to be put in before the websites start to yield results. Of course you can see the sales move up if you already have a website that is up and running and earning its keep.
The moot question is whether these web hosting companies are really signed up with the review websites. Are these websites rating the web hosting services in a legal and ethical way? We can safely say that while some are conscientious about it, many rarely review them in an independent fashion.
One of the possibilities is that most of these sites have already set up RSS feeds leading to review sites like web hosting talk or others and directed the reviews already available on them to their sites. In case some sites do conduct their own reviews, they must be definitely using their own links to collect their percentage on sales. Some hosts allow this practice so they can save on the costs of research.
Companies resort to a novel method of cutting their advertisement expenses by getting the affiliates to market the product. While the customer does not pay anything more for ,the product, the web host completes a sale while the affiliate is assured of the commission.
Many people dislike affiliate marketers who cover up the web hosting owner links to make it appear that the hosting service is doing the general public a singular favor by selling cheap. We must remember that the affiliates only want their commissions and it is pleasant to know they very often get fooled. You see, when you disable or delete cookies form your browser history, you also wipe out the code that is used by affiliates to keep tabs on the sales they have made. In such cases, the client will get the discounted hosting package, the hosting company still makes a sale and a lot of money but the affiliate has no claim on this sale.
