Where Should You Host Your PhpBB Website

Not all web hosting companies support a phpBB site. Indeed many might not even be able to support websites that include a forum or online community. Some web hosting companies may tell clients that if they want a forum on their website then they will have to install it themselves, which requires a fair bit of coding knowledge and a familiarity with the process involved in creating effective bulletin boards or forums. While plenty of people belong to different communities and are used to posting on forums, it is a quite different prospect to try and install one on your own website.

There are a fair number of good web hosting companies that are able to provide one click installation of phpBB forums. If you have a site with a forum then you will need a hosting company that has sufficient space to support it, which is why it is so important to do your research before signing up to a host. Linux hosting is good for supporting PHP software, although Windows servers can also host PHP despite the fact that some aspects will not run in a Windows environment, especially where some rewrite is needed for SEO.

Most Linux hosting servers have Cpanel administration where you can then login and install the script for your forum. Cpanel with Fantastico means that you can have one click installations with easy to follow instructions that can have your website up and running and a forum installed in minutes. The most common hosting option functions with what are commonly referred to as static sites but this is not the case with a forum, not all hosting companies can cope with forums because of the amount of resources, i.e., bandwidth etc that such a site needs.

One of the problems with online communities, such as a forum, is that nobody can predict the rate at which such a community will grow. If you don't want to have problems and the hosting of your site interrupted then as soon as your realise the community is growing fast, you should make plans to move it somewhere that can stand the extra load. A site may start out quite small, but once it gains popularity and notoriety you could find yourself with thousands of visitors each day. In this instance, you need to have a dedicated server option that will allow you decent levels of uptime and plenty of storage.

If you currently have a shared hosting plan for your phpBB website then you might want to move it to private or dedicated hosting, or even a VPS hosting package or a virtual private server package. With a virtual private server you get dedicated server rights as you would with dedicated hosting, but you also get admin rights along with it.
Providing your forum does not exceed two thousand members, then you should be able to continue with a shared web hosting package; but if it grows beyond this figure then you will need to migrate your site to dedicated hosting or to a virtual private server package.
